I am delighted you took the time to come visit my blog. I hope you’ll come back time and time again. My goal is to give you plenty of reasons to continue to come back.

So, what do I plan to write about here:

Many of the people who will come here will have read my stories or essays. They will be interested in learning more about the writing process and creativity. I have started a series of blogs titled “The Story Behind the Story” where I am going through the table of contents of my debut story collection and discussing the creative process, including the original idea for the story, the revision process, ideas for names and places, technical challenges I faced as I tried to write the story I wanted to write, and even the submission history of the stories.

I am also an avid fan of greasy spoon restaurants–places where you can get good home-cooking at a reasonable price with plenty of food on your plate. I am also in search of the perfect hamburger. In my home state of Arkansas, we have plenty of these places. They open early for breakfast, or later around 10:30 or 11 to serve lunch. They usually close by 2 PM if not sooner. I want to write about as many of them as I can find, and if you have a suggestion or a place you’d like reviewed, please let me know!

I used to write a column for the “Planet Weekly” in Tuscaloosa Alabama. In that column I basically mused about observations and events and life in general. I plan to revisit some of those old columns and hope to give them new life here on this blog.

Of course, I will also use the blog to keep you posted on my writing projects. Stay tuned for a major announcement on what is soon to follow my debut story collection “God’s Naked Will.” I will also announce readings, appearances and workshops as they are scheduled. If you can make it out, please make sure to let me know you learned about the event on my blog!

About “God’s Naked Will” :

John Dufresne, Author of No Regret, Coyote, says  of God’s Naked Will:

“C. D. Mitchell has written an absorbing debut collection of stories that are at once, bold, risky, and wildly entertaining. God’s Naked Will & Other Sacrilege pays attention to the world, specifically to the American South, more specifically to the Christ-haunted landscape that is northeast Arkansas, and celebrates its fragile and complicated lives. The harrowing story “Job’s Comforter,” alone, is worth the price of the book. Here is a writer just beginning to flex his considerable creative muscles. The stories are full of honesty, heart, energy, and ambition.”

Neil Connelly, The Midlife Crisis of Commander Invincible:

Sinners pay heed!  C.D. Mitchell has arrived, and with the fervor of a Bible-thumping preacher, he reveals God’s Naked Will These stories occupy the thin border region between the sacred and the profane, examining the difference between fear and faith, love and sex, salvation and self-delusion.  At turns erotic and hysterical (often, astonishingly, in the same passage), Mitchell shreds the superficial lives of small town holy men and hookers, devoted virgins and hired studs. Brutal and unrelenting, this stellar collection lovingly reveals, again and again, the undeniable frailty of the human soul. Step forward now and receive the word!
